Ecuador votes to stop oil drilling in national park

Following on from last week’s Montana court decision, there’s another good news story for the climate. The Guardian reports the result of a referendum in Ecuador, where voters have decided to halt the development of all new oil wells in the Yasuní national park in the Amazon. The margin was a convincing 58% in favour to 41% opposed and will keep about 726 million barrels of oil in the ground.

It begs the question, what would the result be if similar votes were to take place in other countries?
