Food and food waste

Food is something we can’t live without, so by definition we can’t eliminate the environmental impact it has, we can only work to reduce it. Fortunately there is opportunity aplenty to do so - it is thought that our food production system is responsible for about 35% of our total greenhouse gas emissions. There are two main areas to start with when it comes to food - nutrition and food waste.

Nutrition

Here’s another one of those times when doing something for the planet also benefits you. We live in a world where almost 2 billion adults and 340 million children are overweight or obese. Reducing our consumption of animal products (dairy, meat and eggs) and processed food is not only good for the environment, but it is good for us. We’re not telling everyone they should suddenly become vegan, but with that in mind we also want to showcase whole foods, where they come from, and some amazing ways you can use them.

Food waste

Did you know that one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally? That’s enough to feed two billion people! Clearly our food consumption represents an enormous opportunity to reduce our impact on the environment and help those less fortunate. Learning how to reduce food waste and embrace food hygiene (because let’s face it, if you’re not sure if something is safe to eat then you’re not going to eat it) can help lower your carbon footprint significantly.
