Who got us into this mess? Part 1
Here we are in the year 2023, and the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has told us that humans are unequivocally responsible for global warming and that some of the impacts of climate change can no longer be avoided. In fact, “there is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all”, but deep, rapid and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions could mean we avoid the worst impacts.
Before we start looking at what we need to do going forward, let’s take a look at how we got here in the first place. Playing the blame game isn’t necessarily going to help us solve the climate crisis, but it can help identify who has historically been responsible for greenhouse gas emissions and therefore who might have more of a duty to reduce their emissions in the future.
