Which industry sectors emit the most greenhouse gases?

Spoiler alert: we already know the answer to this one - it’s the energy industry, and more specifically the fossil fuel sector. Nonetheless, it is helpful to have a holistic view of which industry sectors contribute to global warming and by how much so that we can understand where our decarbonisation efforts need to be targeted.

Our World in Data has an excellent explanation of sector greenhouse gas emissions that is well worth reading, using information from Climate Watch and the World Resources Institute. It makes the point that there in no single solution to tackle climate change, fixes are required across a diverse range of industry sectors.

We’ll cover individual sectors and some proposed solutions at a later date, but for now have a look at the chart below.
